  • Le mot « Maneki Neko » se compose des mots « chat » (« neko ») et du verbe « inviter » (maneku). Le maneki neko se traduit donc par « le chat qui invite ». La légende raconte que durant l’ère Edo, un homme très riche est passé à côté d’un vieux temple. Devant l’entrée, un chat faisait sa toilette tout en le regardant. Le félin a passé sa patte sur son oreille, et l’homme a pris ce geste pour une invitation à entrer dans le temple. Il a couru jusqu’à l’entrée du lieu. Grand bien lui en a pris puisque la foudre est tombée quelques instants après sur l‘arbre sous lequel il s’était abrité.

    A la suite de ce sauvetage, le chat est devenu l’emblème de la chance et de la prospérité. Il porte un collier rouge et une clochette dorée pour montrer que son maître connaît une activité prospère.
